The diabetic foot is a costly complication of diabetes, both financially and personally, with a combination of neuropathy and peripheral artery disease that can lead to ulceration and limb loss. However, current foot screening recommendations detect diabetic complications too late in their course, and physicians often fail to comply with these guidelines.

Sudomotor nerves are autonomic fibers that innervate sweat glands and are affected early in diabetic neuropathy. Recent sudomotor testing methods are quick, quantitative, reproducible, and can detect the diabetic foot at risk early on. Furthermore, these methods can be implemented for routine clinical screening and accurate follow-up with minimal impact on the clinic's workflow.
